"The Lubomirski Family at Wilanów" - new exhibition opened at the Palace Museum

Few people associate Wilanów with the Lubomirski family, after all it is mainly women of the family who continued the unwritten testament of John III Sobieski, taking care of Wilanów residence – Prince Jan Lubomirski-Lanckoroński emphasizes. In order to remind you of the Lubomirski family relationships with Wilanów, the Palace-Museum opens on the 15th of October the new exhibition “The Lubomirski Family at Wilanów. Politics and private life” to the public.

In the White Room of the Palace-Museum in Wilanów, on the 14th of October, in the presence of, among others, representatives of the Czartoryski and Lubomirski families and representatives of the world of culture, the new exhibition was officially opened, which is the result of work of art historians – museum staff in cooperation with the Princes Lubomirski Foundation.
The exhibition is to remind you of the merits of the Lubomirski family for Wilanów. This family cared about the image of Wilanów residence almost throughout the 18th century. Elżbieta Sieniawska, the daughter of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski bought the decaying palace from the king’s sons and extended the side wings. Izabela Lubomirska née Czartoryska left the 18th century residence in the Rococo style, and her daughter – Aleksandra helped her husband Stanisław Kostka Potocki in the establishment of the first and the only in the 19th century museum of art in Poland in Wilanów.
The Palace collection of Sarmatian portraits of members of the Lubomirski family consists of 62 paintings. As the Director of the Wilanów Palace-Museum Paul Jaskanis stresses, such collections are rare in Poland. The greater satisfaction with the project.
The exhibition consists of two parts. The first one – “Politics” – presents the portraits of representatives of the Lubomirski family: Stanisław, Jerzy Sebastian, Hieronim Augustyn and Stanisław Herakliusz. They were gathered in the White Room of the Wilanów palace. - What you can see around is this imaginary family gallery of the Lubomirski family and our experiment because we go back to how the White Room looked like in the 19th century, when it was the only museum in Poland – said Anna Ekielska, the exhibition curator.

The second part of the exhibition – “Private life” – is devoted to Izabela Lubomirska née Czartoryska. Portraits were placed in her apartment in the southern wing of the palace: in the Hall, the Living Room and the Golden Bedroom. You can also see the interior of the bath apartment – Lubomirska’s Bathroom, inaccessible on a daily basis. - This is the charm of Wilanów that you can go into the bathroom and see the bath and private apartments of Izabela. We can see the portraits, objects in historical space, in which they functioned years ago – stresses Anna Ekielska.
The latest exhibition is a result of cooperation between the Museum-Palace with the Princes Lubomirski Foundation. - Two years ago we jointly published the first, identified in Poland, cookery book „Compendium Ferculorum” by Stanisław Czerniecki. The current undertaking is another, and probably not the last, joint project of the Wilanów Museum and the Foundation. On this occasion, the Foundation lent private paintings and partially funded the publishing of scientific works related to the exhibition – says Paweł Jaskanis, the director of the Wilanów Museum.
The exhibition will be open from the 15th of October on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 to 15 and on Sundays from 10.30 to 15. Lubomirska’s Bathroom will be open every Friday.
