Polish Embassy in Washington
Prince Kazimierz Lubomirski buys the seat for the Polish Embassy in Washington
After regaining independence, Poland pursued to make advantageous relations with the United States, which was slowly becoming a new world superpower. A permanent diplomatic post was needed to do so; therefore it was decided to establish a legation. The first envoy in Washington from the Polish side was Prince Kazimierz Lubomirski. He arrived in the USA in October 1919 and started his work from finding a suitable seat for the office and the state he represented.
He chose an executive building located on Sixteenth Street. It was a very prestigious location at that time. Italian and French diplomatic posts were situated on the same street. The building of the Polish legation belonged to senator John B. Henderson. Prince Lubomirski quickly decided to buy the property, which became his possession. However, he did not intend to keep it as a private residence but donate it to the Polish Nation. The whole estate was given to the Polish state for a symbolic one dollar. Since then, it has been part of Poland on the territory of the USA and has been a symbolic monument of patriotism of Prince Kazimierz.
